While they had a number of hit singles in the U K the poll winning Liverpool group missed out on the British Invasion for reasons which could never be explained.
After all the very name was in their favor as America turned to all things Merseybeat and with original songs amongst the covers they were the same as Gerry & the Pacemakers.
The first single came from the right sources-the Shirelles as did the 4th-Dionne Warwick's Wishin' & Hopin'.What should have been the American breakthrough was killed when Dusty Springfield covered the same song and charted high in the States.
The biggest hit I THINK OF YOU was written by a failed singer Peter Lee Stirling who also provided the follow up.Soundwise the songs were perfect for America yet I don't even know of any covers.
By the time of the Lovin' Spoonful they had some of the sound of the Merseybeats-probably a coincidence but there you go. Who knows?
